CAMROSE, Alta. (Staff) – It appears health cuts were on the minds of Albertans last week when they elected a Liberal to the Legislature.

Mary Anne Balsillie defeated Progressive Conservative candidate Ross Quinn by 99 votes in the provincial Redwater byelection.

Premier Ralph Klein admitted the defeat seemed to be caused by policies which have slashed $470 from the health budget since 1992.

Despite the loss, Klein said he doesn’t plan to change his health care policies. Instead, he said better communication about the cuts is needed.

The byelection was held to replace Liberal Nick Taylor who was recently appointed to the Senate.
