Fossil fuel companies have control in Canada

Re: Woke Culture and Agriculture column by Kevin Hursh on page 11 of the Feb. 2 issue.

Hursh appears enamoured with the American extreme right-wing slang, “woke culture,” exemplified particularly by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Presumably, it is a reference to progressive thinking concerning climate breakdown.

Hursh trots out the tired old Harper-era argument that Canada is responsible for only a minuscule amount of the world’s emissions. He neglects to add that Canada exports a significant portion of its greenhouse gases, and that, unlike many developed economies, our emissions continue to rise.

Going beyond “Resistant” on crop seed labels

Variety resistance is getting more specific on crop disease pathogens, but that information must be conveyed in a way that actually helps producers make rotation decisions.

Great Britain, for all of its political and economic dysfunction, has managed to meet every one of its committed GHG targets since the 2015 Paris Agreement. Canada has met none.

And, as of late 2022, Britain’s total electrical consumption is now a staggering 87.2 percent emissions free. Where is Canada?

Our country is a laughingstock at any international environmental conference and languishes at the bottom of the list of developed countries combating climate devastation.

In Canada, fossil fuel companies have control. Corporate capture extends throughout all government bodies, from federal to municipal — Alberta being the most obvious example.

Self-proclaimed moderates fit in perfectly with Big Oil’s agenda. Extreme viewpoints are not necessary, indeed, not even especially welcomed. Doubt and questioning are all that is required, which leads to inaction and subsequent petro-profits.

It worked for Big Tobacco for decades and is doing the same in Canada’s oil patch. Mr. Hursh is exactly the advocate that the industry is looking for.
