One of Canada’s most reliable grain customers is safely back in the fold for another year.

Last week the Canadian Wheat Board announced it had renewed its annual supply agreement with the Japan Food Agency.

The board will ship at least 1.2 million tonnes of wheat and 480,000 tonnes of barley to Japan in the calendar year 1998. Prices will be set through weekly tenders.

The wheat volume is unchanged from recent years. The barley volume is down from last year’s 600,000 tonnes but in line with the previous year’s 500,000.

The board’s chief commissioner, Lorne Hehn, said in a news release that barley shipments could exceed the minimum depending on how much barley farmers deliver to the board this year.
