The federal government has announced its support of a United Nations resolution proclaiming 2012 International Year of Co-operatives.
The resolution, Co-operatives in Social Development, is designed to urge governments to create a supportive environment for the development of co-operatives.
It is to be submitted for approval by the UN General Assembly in late December.
If passed, it will declare 2012 International Year of Co-operatives.
According to the government, co-operatives provide services to about 17 million members in Canada and approximately 800 million members internationally.
The government intends to use International Year of Co-operatives to promote the benefits of the co-operative model and to raise awareness of the role co-operatives play in Canada’s socio-economic development.
