Saskatchewan farmers are beginning to file claims after recent spring flooding, insurance companies report.

Coverage for flood-related losses applies to insured livestock and farm equipment, but not home, shop, or grain-related damage, say insurers.

The Insurance Brokers Association of Saskatchewan advises rural residents to move items of value to safety if flood waters threaten, and use sandbags and any other means to protect property.

Jack Fingler, association president, said policy holders should know that insurers do not cover water damage from flooding, seepage, or water leaking through windows, doors or cracks in basement walls.

“While many homeowner policies include coverage for sewer backup, this only covers damage from water or sewage entering the home through basement floor drains. Even then coverage is usually quite restricted and a dollar limit usually applies,” Fingler said.
