A website about the proposed pork processing plant in Lethbridge has caused a stink in the southern Alberta town.
The Stinky Lethbridge website was created by retired teacher Bruce Haig as a way to fight the city’s decision to allow the Taiwanese company Yuan Yi Agricultural and Livestock Enterprise Co. to build a pork processing plant.
“Creating the website was something I could do that maybe others couldn’t,” said Haig, who was cautious about what he said because he is one of four people taking the city to court over the plant.

Russia has had a slow start for its 2025-26 wheat export program, but the pace is starting to pick up and that is a bearish factor for prices.
“Once, whenever the lawsuit is over, I’ll be happy to talk again because I’m really concerned.”
Not everyone in Lethbridge appreciates his new website. They worry investors won’t want to take the so-called Alberta Advantage with so much controversy.
Mayor David Carpenter said he’s disappointed Haig has created the website.
“It’s really unfortunate, is the best you can say,” he said. “It taints the entire community with the opinions of one.”
Carpenter thinks there is only a small, but vocal number of people opposed to the plant. He said he hasn’t considered rebutting the Stinky Lethbridge website on the City of Lethbridge’s website.
“There is no sense giving this type of rubbish any more publicity than it deserves.”
The front page of the Stinky Lethbridge website is the Little Porkers Prediction Page. Prediction Number One is: “Alberta will be nicknamed Hog Hell.” By clicking on prediction one readers can browse a news story about Alberta Agriculture wanting to expand hog production to four million hogs by 2000 and eight to 10 million hogs by 2005.
Prediction Number Two is: “Lethbridge citizens will continue to be unhappy they were left out of the decision process.” Clicking here gives access to published and unpublished letters to the editor of The Lethbridge Herald.
Haig said he has more predictions to post once there has been a decision on the lawsuit.
The suit says the city failed to follow proper procedure when it changed a local zoning bylaw to allow construction of the hog plant on the eastern outskirts of Lethbridge.
Other material on the site includes letters from Iowa, Indiana, Saskatchewan and Alberta opposed to hog plants in their area. Haig also has links to other websites concerned about megabarns, hog odors and manure concerns.
The Stinky Lethbridge website also has connections to Haig’s other websites on western explorers and southern Alberta history. He has a detailed history on the North West Mounted Police trek west and journals of Mountie Sam Steele.
