The Grain Services Union has filed an unfair labor practice charge against Agricore over
what it calls the company’s efforts to spy on union activities.
The union is asking the Canada Industrial Relations Board to award it $100,000 in
damages.
Agricore earlier this month confirmed it had hired a private security firm to monitor union
activities.
However, the Winnipeg-based grain handling company said an overzealous employee of the
firm overstepped his authority by planting a tape recorder in a union meeting room last
month in Swan River, Man.
GSU general secretary Hugh Wagner said Agricore infringed on some basic human rights,
including the right to belong to a union and to discuss union business without fear of
employer surveillance and pressure.
Western Producer employees are members of a different local of the Grain Services Union.
