Two grain handling facilities are being built, each providing something new for prairie farmers.
Paterson GlobalFoods last week announced Long Plain Terminal, a 28,000 tonnes capacity inland terminal to be built at Gleichen, Alta., 70 kilometres east of Calgary.
It is expected to be operating by July 2011.
lt will include the first loop track in Canada, allowing locomotives to remain attached to a train while loading grain cars, providing for continuous and efficient loading.
It will accommodate 130 rail cars that will be loaded in half the time of a traditional car spot.

Also last week, West Central Road and Rail Ltd. (WCRR) opened a producer car loading facility at Dinsmore, Sask., 130 km southwest of Saskatoon.
It’s the fifth WCRR facility and was built following a successful share offering last November that raised $1.3 million from local investors.
It features an enhanced producer car loading program, designed to provide service at a lower cost than commercial grain elevators.
“Our immediate focus upon opening will be to establish a strong customer base by demonstrating the value WCCR passes back to farmers,” said president Rob Lobdell.
