There’s a rumor on the Prairies that if a Saskatchewan farmer nicks his finger on a swather knife, he bleeds dark green. It’s the same dark green as a squashed grasshopper on the front of a pickup truck or the colours of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.Mike Cey, marketing director for Federated Co-operatives Limited, believes farmers will display their Rider pride in the field with Roughrider green grain bins, augers, aeration bins, lawnmowers, windshield washer fluid and bags of potato chips.“It’s kind of a religion.”Cey said Federated only planned to order one specially painted grain bin from Meridian Manufacturing in Camrose, Alta., for a display at the Western Canada Farm Progress Show in Regina to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the football team. When dealers at the farm centres heard about the Roughrider bins, another 12 were ordered.“We were actually surprised at even getting 13 orders. The uptake exceeded our expectations,” Cey said.“It’s injecting a little bit of fun into our industry.”Depending on the size, the specially painted bins cost another $1,200 to $1,500 for paint and about another $250 for each logo. If enough farmers want the bins, Federated may place another order in the fall.Cey said farmers who support other CFL teams may want to order grain bins painted in their team’s colours.“Maybe Stampeder fans can proudly show their pride with a Stampeder bin,” he said. The Western Canada Farm Progress Show runs in Regina June 16-18.
