A former Tory is now Alberta’s new Liberal leader.
Nancy MacBeth, formerly Nancy Betkowski, a former Conservative cabinet minister who lost to Ralph Klein in the 1992 Conservative leadership race, is now at the head of an Alberta political party.
MacBeth beat three other candidates to take over the provincial Liberal leadership from Grant Mitchell, who stepped down earlier this month.
MacBeth took 56 percent of the vote on the first ballot. Former Liberal agriculture critic Ken Nicol earned 27 percent, Karen Leibovici 14 percent and Linda Sloan four percent.
MacBeth doesn’t have a seat in the legislature and will watch her party from the visitor’s gallery until a seat becomes vacant.
She is the first woman to lead the party.
