Food safety legislation
going through the U.S. Congress would make exporting to the United
States more difficult and could force changes to Canadian food safety
programs, says a Canadian analyst.
Shelley Thompson of SJT
Solutions in Regina told a conference last week that American
legislation likely coming out in 2010, will impose new food safety
rules on products imported into the U.S.
It could require more
stringent traceability than exists in Canada and restrict imports to
processing plants that have implemented a Hazard Analysis Critical
Control Points program, she and other analysts concluded in a report
prepared for Agriculture Canada.
The report has not yet been made
public, but Thompson told a seminar co-sponsored by Grain Growers of
Canada and Canada Grains Council Nov. 24 that the new American rules
will create problems for Canadian exporters.
