The House of Commons and MPs paid tribute in October to the armed forces personnel and volunteers who traveled to Manitoba in the spring to help combat the Red River flood.
Thirty military personnel and 40 volunteers were praised from the floor of the Commons and later at a reception.
“Those of you who are here before me today represent all of the men and women who took part in that effort of Canadian solidarity,” said Speaker Gilbert Parent.
“Through you, we salute their extraordinary work, their courage, their spirit of co-operation and their readiness to lend a helping hand.”
Provencher, Man. Liberal MP David Iftody, the only Liberal elected from the flood-affected area, tied it to the national unity issue.
“Our communities will never forget the francophone armed forces and reserve members from Quebec who fought alongside Mennonite families to save their homes,” he said. “These demonstrations of unity from across Canada express who we really are as a people.”
