Producers will now have until October to apply for financial assistance under the Cover Crop Protection Program.

The original deadline for the $50 million federal program was Aug. 31, but it has been extended to Oct. 31 the 2005 and 2006 crop year claims.

The program was created to provide assistance to farmers unable to plant a crop in the two crop years due to damage and moisture caused by spring flooding, principally in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The program has already received 8,000 applications representing claims on more than 2.5 million acres. The figure represents only a third of total claims expected.

More than 800 payments totalling $3 million have already been paid out.

Under the program, farmers can receive a one-time payment of $15 per flooded acre.

For application forms, call 800-667-8567.
