An early morning fire at the Wild West Steelhead fish farm near Lucky Lake, Sask., destroyed buildings on shore but spared fish stocks swimming underwater.
Const. Jason Richards of the RCMP’s Kyle detachment reported that the machine shop, main office and processing plant were destroyed at the site on Lake Diefenbaker.
An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported and no estimates were available on damage. The fire was reported at 1:30 a.m. Aug. 11.
Wild West Steelhead, which has operated since 1992, is one of Canada’s largest steelhead trout producers, raising and processing fish from eggs through to fillets and housing them in pens set into the lake.
It produces 600,000 steelheads annually, or about 1,200 tonnes of live weight fish.
The former Saskatchewan Wheat Pool once operated it as the CanGro fish farm.
