Ensask Biofuels of Tisdale, Sask., has applied to the federal EcoAgriculture Biofuels Capital initiative for $20 million to assist its ethanol plan.

Ensask plans to build a 90 million litre ethanol plant that will use idled alfalfa dehydration equipment to process the plant’s byproduct, distillers grain, into a pelleted feed ingredient.

“Ensask has first hand experience processing, marketing, distributing and exporting agricultural products, which is key to successfully establishing an ethanol facility and an asset in forging partnerships with the community and senior government,” said chief executive officer James Leier.

Under the program, projects with at least 20 percent producer equity are eligible for up to 20 cents per litre in capital funding to a maximum of 25 percent of the project’s capital cost.
