The internet, busy lives and waning interest led to the decline of a
female marketing club at Rosenort, Man.
“People weren’t interested in it anymore,” said former member Elsa
Wolf, who farms with her husband Klaus near Brunkild.
“Once you get the basics, you think it’s not necessary anymore.”
She said the club operated for about a year. It was one of two female
clubs in the region, one at Starbuck and one at Rosenort. Neither club

is still operating. Wolf joined to increase her understanding of
options and futures.
“I want to be involved and want to know,” she said. Many women are
embarrassed to know less about marketing than their husbands, who often
handle the lion’s share of that part of farm work.
The club helped her gain confidence and increase her knowledge of
marketing options.
“You can have some input.”
Citing factors in the demise of the local club, she pointed to the
increased use of the internet for marketing and the departure of a
supportive local agricultural representative. Increased
responsibilities on and off the farm have also limited the time women
have available, Wolf said.
