Marta Haley, manager of corporate and social responsibility for Elanco, said the company has projects underway in Indonesia and Zambia to help feed the hungry.
Through the Heifer International program, Elanco helps provide an animal to a family that in turn will pass on the offspring and animal husbandry skills learned to neighbours.
“We want to take people from being hungry to healthy. We want to empower people. We want to have an impact that’s sustainable,” she said.
Indonesia was chosen because it has the highest poverty rate in Sumatra of nearly 24 percent and a 17 percent undernourished rate.

In Zambia, two out of three people live on less than $1 per day. It has the seventh highest HIV rate in the world.
“Our project will support 6,200 families with livestock, mainly with a dairy focus…. We’ll work together to improve soil management, vegetable production and conservation practices.”
