Despite its location in a livestock area, the Feed-Rite feed mill in Lacombe, Alta., will close its doors.

Denis Daudet, manager of the Lacombe facility, said the manufacturing facility is old, in substandard physical and mechanical condition and can no longer meet customers’ needs.

Ridley, the Australian feed company, bought the Quality Feeds plant in 1995, a year after Ridley bought the Canadian Feed-Rite company.

In a News release

news, the company said there is an excess of feed manufacturing capacity in the area and a new plant would not be built to replace the aging one.

Daudet said since the announced closing there have been a few inquiries about turning the mill into a plant dedicated to manufacturing feed only for a single species.

The company’s facility in Linden, Alta., will take over the manufacturing of feed for area producers.

The Feed-Rite facility’s retail store will remain open to sell bagged feed and mineral, said Daudet.
