A livestock feed assistance program is being rolled out for Alberta.

The province’s agriculture minister and a Calgary MP announced aid Oct. 20 for producers hit hard again by another year of drought.

A joint Canada-Alberta AgriRecovery assistance program worth $160 million will be made available to livestock producers affected by this year’s drought conditions. It will cover losses and help with extraordinary cost pressures caused by this year’s conditions.

Eligible producers will be able to access up to $150 per head for breeding stock as of Dec. 31 with the application process closing Jan. 15, 2024.

Eligible expenses will be covered up to the end of March 2024 but only in areas designated by the Agriculture Financial Services Corp. in Alberta.

Under the overall AgriRecovery framework, British Columbia and Saskatchewan ranchers and farmers will be eligible for $219 million in total federal funding along with their respective provincial portions of the program.
