The federal Liberal government has formally rejected a summer
recommendation from the Liberal-dominated House of Commons agriculture
committee that the Canadian Wheat Board try an experiment in ending the
single desk monopoly.
“The government of Canada supports the mandate of the CWB and is
committed to preserving the ability of Canadians to operate the orderly
marketing systems necessary for stability and profitability,” said a
government report tabled in the House of Commons Nov. 8.
In June, the committee surprised the grain industry by recommending for
the first time that the CWB consider “on a trial basis a free market
for the sale of wheat and barley.”
