WASHINGTON, D.C. – The world is running short of water and farmers will have to give up some of their share for households and industry, according to a report March 9 by the International Food Policy Research Institute.

During the past 40 years, water use has risen 100 percent in the United States, 500 percent in Europe and 300 percent in Africa.

Mark Rosegrant, author of the report, said agriculture now accounts for about 70 percent of water consumption. But urban users must improve their efficiency in water use, in addition to drawing from agricultural sources, he said.
