CALGARY (Staff) – Voting is drawing to a close in Alberta’s wheat and barley marketing plebiscite.
Eligible voters were allowed to request mail-in ballots up to Nov. 21. Returned ballots must have postmarks no later than Nov. 24 and be received by the returning officer no later than Dec. 1 to be included in the count.
The plebiscite returning office in Edmonton said when voting, farmers were asked to fill in a registration form with their names, addresses and positive proof of identification such as a driver’s licence or an Alberta health care card. If they do not have one of these, two other pieces of identification are required. All voters must be Alberta residents and 18 years of age or older.
Farmers may vote at any district agriculture office or at Agriculture Financial Services Corporation offices in Thorhild, Grimshaw, Castor and Ponoka. Polling stations are open from 8:30 to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
A total of 40,000 ballots were printed with 4,000 ballots mailed out as of Nov. 14 when voting started. Voting ends Nov. 24.
