Ontario corn producers are being advised that as many as 20 of the 300 varieties available for planting in the province this spring will not be accepted by corn processors because they contain biotech gene modification not yet approved for import into the European Union.
The Ontario Corn Producers Association is spreading the word about which varieties to be wary about planting.
North American processors have announced they will not buy varieties that cannot be sold to Europe.
The OCPA said the 20 varieties will account for no more than four percent of Ontario acreage.
And while up to 25 percent of the province’s crop this year will be genetically modified corn, most will come from varieties which have been approved for sale in the EU.
