Agricore United has postponed demolition of its wooden grain elevator

in Hines Creek, Alta.

Instead, the company will lease it to a group of farmers who will use

it for off-farm grain storage. The two sides are still finalizing the

terms of the lease arrangement.

“We’re really pleased with the decision,” said Don Wieben of Fairview,

one of the farmers hoping to lease the elevator from AU for three years.

The elevator was scheduled for demolition earlier this month, but a

flurry of last minute negotiations between the company and the farmers

postponed the decision. AU rejected two of the farmers’ offers to buy

the elevator before accepting the offer to lease.

“Hopefully there will be a happy ending,” Wieben said.
