WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg egg company has been fined $1,000 for misrepresenting the grade of eggs it was selling.

Sundale Egg (1986) Ltd. was convicted July 27 after its manager Kenneth Charles Munday pleaded guilty to two charges under the Canada Agricultural Products Act.

The Canadian Egg Marketing Agency asked Agriculture Canada officials to investigate allegations in 1993 that the company was misrepresenting surplus eggs as a higher grade.

Under the egg marketing system, eggs that are surplus to the table market are purchased by marketing boards for sale to processors.

Federal officials inspected a shipment from the company and found 1,800 eggs were labelled Canada Nest Run, when in fact they were Canada Grade C — which was worth about 65 cents less per dozen.

An inspection of the company’s delivery to an Alberta plant found 3,600 dozen eggs had inaccurate labels.
