A company that makes a vaccine designed to prevent cattle from shedding a dangerous E. coli strain has received government money to help build a production plant.

Bioniche Life Sciences Inc. received a $10 million loan from the Ontario government and $5 million loan from the federal government, said a company news release.

The plant in Belleville, Ont., will produce a vaccine designed to significantly reduce the levels of E. coli O157:H7 bacteria in cattle and their manure.

The product is now under a conditional licence allowing distribution through veterinarians, but the company plans wide distribution once full approval is received from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Bioniche plans to spend $25 million to increase vaccine production in Belleville over the next two years to provide 40 million doses of the vaccine.

The project is part of a long-term, $100 million project to create an animal health and food safety vaccine manufacturing centre.
