A worldwide meeting of Angus breeders in the United Kingdom in June has been canceled because of the fear of spreading foot-and-mouth disease around the world.

More than 100 Canadians had planned to go to the World Angus Forum in Scotland to learn about industry developments.

“There’s absolute understanding on the part of our members,” said Maureen Armitage, office manager for the Canadian Angus Association.

Armitage said as soon as the first case of foot-and-mouth was discovered, the Scottish society of the Angus Association worried about the fate of the meeting.

India has imposed a 30 per cent duty on yellow pea imports with a bill of lading date on or after Nov. 1, 2025.

With three months to go before the gathering, organizers hoped the virus would be under control. But with the spread of the disease, many Canadians canceled plans to go to the meeting, which included tours of farms in Scotland, England and Ireland.

The producers couldn’t take the risk of bringing the disease back to Canada.

“In Scotland they are particularly sensitive to the consequences of the disease. Over here we’re sensitive to keeping it off the continent.”

Canada and the United States are among the 47 countries free of foot-and-mouth disease.

The organizing committee has tentatively re-scheduled the forum for the same time next year.
