Delegates to the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities midterm convention passed a resolution calling for massive stimulus to the agriculture sector.

The resolution called for SARM to lobby the federal government for a $250 per acre payment for farmers, in addition to whatever they would receive under crop insurance and AgriStability programs.

It said the Vancouver Olympics and the G-8 and G-20 summits cost more than $1 billion each and the federal government had spent billions subsidizing other industries such as Bombardier, Air Canada and General Motors.

“The cost to save the agriculture industry would be a mere $2.5 billion to the federal coffers,” the resolution said.
