OTTAWA – Saskatchewan Reform MP Lee Morrison last week must have wondered who really won the prize that came with winning the election in his riding two years ago.

By the voter tally on the night of Oct. 26, Morrison beat Liberal Robert Heinrichs by 825 votes in the Swift Current-Maple Creek-Assiniboia constituency.

But Morrison last week noted in Parliament that Heinrich has been appointed by the Liberal government to the National Parole Board.

“On a daily basis, that is more lucrative work than being an MP,” he said Oct. 23. “It pays to be a loser if you are a Liberal.”

He mockingly asked what “rigorous selection and screening process” the government had used when making the appointment.

Applications accepted

Solicitor General Herb Gray said the position had been advertised, candidates applied, the chair of the board reviewed them and made recommendations.

“It was on the basis of competence and merit that the decision was made,” he said.

Morrison came back by noting that Heinrich’s campaign manager already has been appointed to the board of the Farm Credit Corporation.
