A pilot project to turn excess dairy products into a variety of pet and livestock food recently got a boost from the federal government.
The pilot project, led by Vitalus Nutrition of Abbotsford, B.C., will use roller dryer technology to transform excess liquid created during dairy production into ingredients that can be used for livestock and pet food.
The $220,090 funding, announced by federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz Feb. 15, follows the completion of a feasibility study by Vitalis Nutrition of the potential to transfer these raw materials into a viable product.
Disposal of byproducts is a change for the dairy processing industry. Usually, this protein-based excess product is dumped down municipal sewers.
Reusing these byproducts will help the industry, the economy and the environment, said the federal news release.
