Elk destroyed in Alberta and Saskatchewan due to risks of contracting
chronic wasting disease have shown no signs of the disease in
post-mortem tests.
Ken Stepushyn of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said all results
were negative on slaughtered animals believed to be in contact with the
two cases of CWD this spring.
One animal came from a farm north of Edmonton, while the other came
from a captive herd in the Prince Albert, Sask., area.
The CFIA continues to investigate how the animals got the disease, said
Stepushyn, who expects to have some answers within four weeks.
“It leads us to believe they were in some contact with infected
animals,” said Stepushyn.
