Prairie grain farmers will soon be getting cheques to cover increases in the initial payments for wheat, durum and barley.
The increases range from $42.45 to $91.30 per tonne for wheat, depending on grade and class. They were announced by the Canadian Wheat Board Nov. 26 and took effect Dec. 2.
This increase followed a more circuitous process than usual.
The CWB first recommended an increase to the federal government on Sept. 3.
However, it became clear that with continuing issues, including a slow harvest, questionable grain volume and quality and rising world prices, further revisions would be required, said spokesperson Maureen Fitz henry.
She said the board then had two choices: let the first recommendation go through and apply for another increase, or combine them into a revised recommendation that would provide a bigger increase.
