At least one election for Canadian Wheat Board director has been assured.

Two candidates are officially on the ballot in District 3, with incumbent Larry Hill of Swift Current and challenger Stephen Vandervalk of Fort Macleod, Alta., ready to do battle.

Hill, a director since 1998, is a supporter of single desk marketing, while Vandervalk advocates the open market option.

None of the other four districts holding elections had multiple candidates nominated as of Oct. 16.

Incumbents Art Macklin of Grande Prairie, Alta., Allen Oberg of Forestburg, Alta., and Bill Nicholson of Shoal Lake, Man., have been nominated for re-election in districts 1, 5 and 9 respectively. All are single desk supporters.

In District 7, only one candidate is running so far, with Kyle Korneychuk, a 47-year-old farmer from Pelly, Sask., seeking the directorship currently held by incumbent Dwayne Anderson of Fosston, Sask.

While his autobiography posted on the CWB election website makes no mention of the single desk issue, Korneychuk does say he advocates farmers working together “at every opportunity.”

Incumbent Anderson, a supporter of eliminating the single desk and implementing an open market, has said he will seek re-election but as of Oct. 16 had not filed nomination papers. The deadline is Oct. 23.
