SASKATOON (Staff) – The delayed harvest has prompted the Canadian Wheat Board to extend its delivery contract deadline to Nov. 8.
“Ever since harvest began, we’ve been looking at that (expiry) date approaching and the harvest progress,” said board information officer Deanna Allen.
The extension is part of a four point plan to help farmers deal with a late, wet harvest.
- The board will offer a special series contract to farmers next spring for unthreshed grain left in the field over winter.
- It will recommend the federal government implement a cash advance program for unthreshed grain, possibly by late November.
- Delivery calls will be announced in a way that enables manageable delivery of high-moisture grain into the handling system to make the best use of handling and drying capacity.

Allen said the board appreciates farmers’ efforts to dry grain on the farm, but probably a fair amount will be delivered tough and damp.
“We’ll have to allow a consistent amount of tough and damp into the system so that we don’t end up with space clogged while grain is waiting to be dried in order to be moved.
“There will need to be good communication with everyone in the handling system to find out what is available, what we can bring in and what can be done.”
