Crop Production Week 2015

The Western Canada Crop Production Show is up and running for another year and farmers from across the Prairies are gathering in Saskatoon for an action-packed week of meetings, presentations and educational lectures on all things crop-related.

Western Producer reporters are there, too, covering everything of interest to our readers.

From Crop Production Week to Cropshere, you can follow all the action below, where we’ll be curating tweets, posting images, videos and stories.

AAFC scientist Eric Johnson presented his research into herbicide resistant mustard at the Sask Mustard Development Commission’s meeting during Crop Production Week.

Tom Wolf presented on spray drift management at the Western Canadian Crop Production Show on Wednesday morning. The Western Producer reporter Robin Booker caught up to Wolf and asked him about trends in spraying technology and techniques.

Jeff Schoenau presented research on developing variable rate prescriptions, during the Western Canadian Crop Production Show. The Western Producer asked Schoenau what challenges producers face in making a good variable prescription map.

Olga Walsh came up from the University of Idaho to present on crop sensors for precision agriculture. In this video, Walsh talks to WP reporter Robin Booker about how crop sensors can help producers involved in precision agriculture.

Owen Olfert, Agriculture Canada scientist, provided a 2015 forecast for insect pests of field crops, during Cropsphere.

Jodi Dejong-Hughes, Educator in Crops and Soils at University of Minnesota Extension, explained her research into soil compaction, during a January 13 session at Cropsphere. WP reporter Robin Booker caught up to her after her presentation and asked her about soil compaction in zero till cropping systems, tracks, and how to reduce soil compaction.

Dr. Richard Grosshans, senior research scientist at the International Institute for Sustainable Development, presented his research on cattail harvesting at the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association’s 25th annual conference, which was held at the Western Canadian Crop Production Show.

In this video WP reporter Robin Booker asked Grosshans why he is researching cattail harvesting, when producers might see a cattail biomass industry in the Prairies, and whether some of the nutrients cattails absorb can be recaptured for use on the farm.

Jamie Larsen works for Agriculture and Agrifood Canada based out of Lethbridge, Alberta, and he has been researching fall rye. Even though rye has been on the decline of seeded acres in Western Canada, Larsen is optimistic the crop will see a resurgence. Find out why in this video.
