Canadian Pacific Railway is doing some spring cleaning.

The rail company announced last week it is spending $125,000 to clean grain off the exterior end sills of 3,000 grain hopper cars.

The program is designed to address the problem of grain being left on sills during the loading process, then spilling along the tracks, creating a safety hazard for wildlife.

The company said in a news release it is also introducing new tariffs July 7 to encourage shippers to participate in the clean-up.

Customers who identify and clean debris from end sills will receive a discount on their freight rate.

Conversely, companies identified as leaving spilled grain behind will face penalties.

More than 2,000 cars have been cleaned so far, with the remainder to be done by September. The work is being done in Calgary, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw.
