REGINA (Staff) – Three cars containing anhydrous ammonia and two containing propane were among 13 that left the CP Rail System tracks near Wilcox, Sask., Jan. 30.

A section of Highway 39, between Wilcox and Corinne south of Regina, was closed for two days as crews cleaned up the cars.

CP Rail spokesperson John Timmins said none of the cars leaked. However, an area three kilometres around the site was cordoned off and the highway closed as a precautionary measure while the hazardous material was cleaned up.

Of the other cars involved, five contained lumber, one contained liquor and two were empty, Timmins said.

The 62-car train had left Moose Jaw and was heading to the United States when the derailment happened around 7 a.m. Jan. 30. The track was reopened around 6 p.m. Feb. 1.

An earlier derailment occurred on the same line just four days earlier but about 60 kilometres farther south.

Timmins said the causes of both derailments are under investigation.
