Farmers may get a chance to voice their opposition to the proposed bill governing the Canadian Wheat Board, says the chair of the federal agriculture standing committee.
Lyle Vanclief said he is “optimistic” members will come on a week-long tour of the Prairies to listen to farmers’ concerns about Bill C-72, the proposed legislation governing the grain marketing agency.
“I’m optimistic that we can travel, and it’s my full intention, the committee will be in Western Canada during March for one week,” said the Liberal member of Parliament.
Procedures ahead
There are still some hurdles to jump before the group comes west, he said. The bill has to be debated in the House of Commons, brought to the agriculture committee, and a decision made on how best to get comments on it.
He hopes to stop in Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary and Grande Prairie, Alta.
