Innovators recognized
The western Canadian pork industry has recognized three industry leaders with awards at the Banff Pork Seminar.
The F.X. Aherne Awards for Innovative Pork Production were announced at the meeting held Jan. 22-23 in Banff, Alta.
Peter Heyblom of Sunterra Farms, Didsbury, Alta., was recognized for his creation of a safe handling system for boars. The boar restraint system that Heyblom designed controls the animals in the pen so producers can have safe access while taking blood samples or semen.
Lauren and Nancy Wiebe of Topeaka Farms Ltd., of Grunthal, Man., won an award for their work in public education and manure management.
The Wiebes were concerned about community reaction to the livestock industry and about the fact that most fears are based on incorrect information.
The Wiebes opened their farm and held tours to improve community relations and get the message out that manure is a valuable resource.
Selene Kiltau of Big Sky Farms Inc. of Sturgis Sask., was selected for her research into unique ways to collect information on pen design and performance evaluation on large groups of pigs.
Her research compares the performance of grow-finish pigs in conventional versus large pens using an auto-sorter and weigh system.
The F.X. Aherne awards apply to producers, owners, managers and consultants in the West’s pork industry. All entries must be in use on a farm in Western Canada.
Bourgault makes donation
Bourgault Industries has donated $25,000 to the Canada Equipment Dealers Foundation endowment fund.
The fund supports educational programs and seminars for dealers and scholarships at post-secondary institutions in Western Canada.
“With today’s technological ad-vancements, now more than ever, our dealers need qualified educated employees to be able to provide high quality product support to farm operators,” Gerry Bourgault, president of Bourgault Industries, said in a News release
news.
Bourgault is a manufacturer of seeding and tillage equipment.
