Philom Bios executive
Philom Bios Inc. has announced the appointment of new executives.
David Cortens is the new chief financial officer and corporate secretary, Trevor Thiessen is vice-president of commercial operations and Sanford Gleddie has been named vice-president of business development.
“The new executive greatly enhances our capacity to drive the ongoing growth and performance of the company,” said company president John Cross in a News release

Cortens assumes overall responsibility for the financial management of the company. He has worked 25 years as a chartered accountant in public accounting, CFO in the financial services sector, and most recently as vice-president of finance and corporate secretary for a scientific instrument company.
Thiessen is responsible for company operations including manufacturing and marketing. He worked for Philom during the 1990s and returned to the company last year after working in the canola seed sector.
Gleddie is responsible for investments, and research and development of new products and processes. He joined Philom in 1988.
Research teams funded
Two University of Saskatchewan-led national research teams have received a total of $1.15 million over three years to study agricultural practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Soil science professor Dan Pennock’s team received $720,000 from the Biocap Canada Foundation, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Ducks Unlimited, the Canadian Wildlife Service and the U of S Centre for Studies in Agriculture, Law and the Environment to study nitrous oxide emissions from tilled fields and sloughs.
Team members are from the University of Manitoba, Agriculture Canada, Ducks Unlimited and the U of S.
Agricultural economics professor Surendra Kulshreshtha’s team received $438,590 from Biocap and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to study the economic impact of emission-reducing changes to agricultural production and management activities.
Team members include researchers from the University of British Columbia, the University of Guelph, Agriculture Canada and the U of S.
