Furtan’s work recognized
University of Saskatchewan agricultural economist Hartley Furtan has won an award to conduct research into standardizing Canadian and American domestic agricultural policies.
Furtan will spend four months at the University of Maryland under the Canada-United States Fulbright Award.
Furtan hopes that by looking at the issue, the research will provide ways to minimize trade disputes between the two countries.
Furtan, who begins the work in January, is a former deputy agriculture minister in Saskatchewan and past-president of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Association.
Welcome to the hall
Leona Petherbridge of Bon Accord and Bert and Pat Pringle of Didsbury have been named 2003 inductees to the Alberta 4-H Hall of Fame.
The awards were announced at the start of national 4-H week, which runs Nov. 3-9.
Petherbridge has been involved with 4-H for more than 42 years, with all four children going through the program.
She was recently named the provincial recipient of the 2003 Co-operators and Canadian 4-H Council Volunteer of the Year award.
The Pringles have long histories with 4-H. They have won numerous awards for their volunteer work in the community, including the Didsbury Agricultural Society Commemorative 100th Anniversary Rural Volunteer Award for 2002.
This year’s inductees join 57 others inducted into the Alberta 4-H Hall of Fame since it began in 1971.
The three will be honoured at the 4-H leaders conference planned for Red Deer on Jan. 10.
Reserve champion
A former Brandon native has won the reserve championship in novice junior trail at the 2003 All-American Quarter Horse Congress held in Columbus, Ohio, from Oct. 6-26.
The five-year-old red roan Quarter Horse gelding named Blueboy Dreamer owned by Colin Luba of Louisville, Kentucky, won its second straight junior trail championship with trainer Tommy Sheets guiding it through the course.
Blue was bred by Dennis and Sylvia Stiles of Circle S Ranch in Brandon.
Since their first show together in 2001, Blue and Luba have won American Quarter Horse Association Youth Registers of merit in halter and performance and an AQHA youth championship.
They have also won four AQHA all-around youth and five reserve all-around youth titles.
In 2003, they earned three youth superior event awards and an AQHA performance champion title.
By the end of September, the pair had racked up eight AQHA all-around youth and 12 all-around youth runner-up titles.
