New research chair
Dan Johnson, a grasslands ecosystem researcher, is joining the University of Lethbridge Jan. 1 as the institution’s fourth Canada Research Chair.
Johnson, a research scientist at the Agriculture Canada Lethbridge Research Centre, has been appointed the chair in sustainable grassland ecosystems. His research involves studying the ecology, ecotoxicology, biodiversity and sustainability of insects, as well as the plants and wildlife of grasslands and farmland ecosystems.
He plans to develop processes and ecological methods that promote responsible management and usefulness of grassland ecosystems.
Johnson’s appointment is worth more than $1.7 million for seven years, plus lab and equipment and lab establishment funding of up to $300,000. Before his appointment, Johnson held an adjunct professorship at the U of L in geography for 10 years, in addition to his work at the research centre.
Software assesses farm
Canadian producers can get help with their business decisions with an internet program called Benchmark for Success. The program allows producers to compare their farms to similar operations. Figures are entered into a spreadsheet and results are automatically calculated and presented in a report.
The report can help producers assess the relative strengths of their operations. Producers can use it to work with their advisers to identify areas where improvements can be made or where future opportunities lie. See www.agr.gc.ca/renewal for details.
