REGINA (Staff) – The port of Churchill, expected to close Sept. 15, will be staying open to accommodate two more shipments.

Shane Foreman, assistant vice-president of corporate affairs for Ports Canada in Ottawa, said about 70,000 tonnes of grain will be shipped through Churchill within the next few weeks.

Workers who received layoff notices Sept. 8 were recalled for Sept. 20.

Foreman said these shipments will put this year’s volume so far at approximately 200,000 tonnes.

If no other shipments leave the port, the total will be the second smallest in the port’s history.

The northern Manitoba port is traditionally open from July 20 to Oct. 31.
