Legendary chuck wagon driver Herman Flad died Aug. 5 after his semi truck and an oncoming pick-up truck collided near Rycroft, Alta.

Flad, 68, was driving from a race in Strathmore, Alta., to Dawson Creek, B.C., for the next leg of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association tour.

Sixteen of his 17 horses in the semi had to be put down because of injuries.

Flad drove chuck wagons for more than 35 years. He won several major championships including the Calgary Stampede, the Grande Prairie Stompede and the Klondike Chuckwagon Derby in Edmonton. Flad qualified for the Calgary Stampede’s sudden death championship final heat four times.

He began outriding in 1965 and took the reins of his own chuck wagon team in 1972.

The day after he was killed, his son Troy competed in the Dawson Creek race in memory of his father.

Police are still investigating the accident.
