The prospects for selling Canadian pork to Chile just got a little bit better.
Last week during a visit to Ottawa, Chilean agriculture minister Carlos Mladinic signed an agreement with Canada committing Chile to accept pork products inspected in any Canadian packing plant designated for export.
Previously, Chilean officials had to inspect and approve a Canadian plant before it could export to Chile. Last year, $1.5 million worth of pork was sold to Chile.
Canadian officials said that number should grow as the new agreement is implemented. Canadian agriculture minister Lyle Vanclief offered to provide bureaucratic advisers to Chile as it tries to implement a farm income safety net system, based largely on Canada’s Net Income Stabilization Account and crop insurance programs.
