SASKATOON (Staff) – The combination of a lower Canadian dollar and higher cash prices in the United States cattle feeding region helped to push Canadian prices up by 50 cents to $1.

Canfax says American buyers were bidding in the Alberta market, forcing local packers to increase their bids in order to compete.

Average price for cattle on the southern Plains was up to $76.50 (U.S.), while the Canadian dollar flirted with either side of 72 cents (U.S.).

Cow trade was also 50 cents to $1 higher, driven by smaller supplies and a poorer quality offering. D1 and D2 cows traded between $58-$70, with sales to $72.
