Saskatoon has a new cattle show. Cattle Congress 1999 was announced Nov. 20 in Saskatoon by Prairieland Exhibition. It will combine the Prairieland Bull Congress and Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association annual meeting.
The event is intended to provide visitors with a trade show, animal exhibits, information programs and a chance to talk with Western Canadian beef industry leaders.
Prairieland officials said they saw an opportunity to add more information to the bull congress by adding the cattle feeder’s meeting. Rudy Friesen, agricultural manager at Prairieland, said the new show will give producers more information tools.

“Management information they can use to assist them in their programs at home and (with) the live animal component, they can do their homework and study their (cattle) genetics and find out how they will proceed … whether it be purchasing a bull for their breeding programs on farm or sourcing some replacement females.”
Alvin Downie, president of the cattle feeders group, said the show will give his organization a higher profile while helping producers.
“The way things are now, there are so many different events going on, I think we have to get together so a lot of producers can come to town for one major event,” Downie said. “They do not have to come in for the cattle feeders and then come back a week later for something else.”
Cattle Congress 1999 is scheduled Feb. 5-6 at Prairieland Exhibition Park in Saskatoon.
