CAMROSE, Alta. – Cargill Ltd. plans to open a research centre in this central Alberta city concentrating on special oilseeds, the city’s economic development co-ordinator announced recently.

Dennis Twomey said for five years the research centre will use about 550 sq. metres of the city’s subsidized office space at the Camrose Regional Exhibition.

“It has been a dream of the CRE’s that Camrose can be a centre for agriculture research. This might be one which we can get it started with,” said Twomey.

The research facility is expected to open in April with nine employees. More staff will be hired once a 550 sq. metre greenhouse is built.

No further details on the deal were available.

“The rent for the greenhouse will be expensive so we end up with a net rent (including the subsidized office space) that is not bad.”

Cargill officials were unavailable for comment.
