A tentative settlement last week kept workers on the job at the CanAmera canola crushing plant at Harrowby, Man.
The union representing the 48 workers said a tentative settlement was reached Oct. 15, three days before a strike was to begin.
Don Keith, a spokesperson for the United Food and Commercial Workers union, said employees at the Harrowby plant will decide within the next few days whether to accept the deal. The negotiating committee for the workers has recommended acceptance of the three-year contract.
Keith said there were two key issues. The union wanted wages increased to at least keep pace with the cost of living. The union also wanted the waiting period for sick leave reduced. Workers now are not paid for the first three days of any absence from work because of illness.
Kachig Anspikian, CanAmera’s plant manager at Harrowby, said Monday he was pleased a tentative settlement was reached.
“There was movement on both sides,” Anspikian said.
