The threat of a strike ended last week at CanAmera Foods’ canola crushing plant near Russell, Man.

Plant workers accepted a three-year contract that will see their wages increase about seven percent over the next 17 months.

Compromise was also reached on the issue of sick pay, a key point during negotiations between CanAmera and United Food and Commercial Workers, the union representing the 50 employees.

“We didn’t get everything we wanted,” said union spokesperson Donald Keith. “I wouldn’t want to pretend that. But it’s a big improvement from what it was.”

According to the union, the settlement gives the 50 workers an immediate wage increase of 35 cents per hour, close to $400 in retroactive pay, plus a $200 signing bonus.

Wages will increase another 40 cents per hour next April, and another 45 cents the following year.

Benefits also were improved.

“I believe the company was very generous,” said CanAmera plant manager Kachig Anspikian.

“I’m hoping this will give us several years of labor peace and co-operation.”
